Yvonne Murphy, Troubled Images Tour Director, writes for the November issue of the Linen Hall Library’s membership newsletter, “Troubled Images: Chicago & Denver”:
The exhibition opened at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago on 6th September. A huge complex on the outskirts of Chicago, the Center comprises an art gallery, museum, auditorium, library and Irish theme bar. Speakers at the Launch included Dan Hynes, Comptroller for the State of Illinois, the Irish Consul, Charles Sheehan, and the British Consul, Andrew Seaton. John Killen and I were the Library representatives at the event.
For the final launch of 2003, the exhibition once again moved westwards. The theme of the Denver launch was trade and investment. Co-sponsored by the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver and the Mayor’s Office for International Trade and Economic Development, the exhibition opened with a gala dinner on the evening of 23rd October.
This was followed on the 24th by a one-day symposium on Economic Development and the Northern Ireland Peace Process. John Gray and I were the keynote speakers at the dinner, along with Jim Lyons, a well known Denver attorney who served as an economic advisor to Ireland during the Clinton administration. Northern Irish academics John Darby and Mari Fitzduff took part in the symposium, along with Jim Lyons, Professors Karen Feste and Tim Sisk of the University of Denver, American academic Dr Cynthia Irvin and South African scholar, Pierre du Toit of the University of Stellenbosch. John W. Hickenlooper, Mayor of Denver and Sam Kinghan of Invest Northern Ireland in Chicago were the lunchtime speakers.
The exhibition “rests” over the Christmas period and opens in the spring of 2004 at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University, California.
