I had the same thought when I saw this Moncler advert in a Harrods Man supplement in October Esquire magazine.
“I saw an unusual ad for Moncler (below left), which makes “outerwear,” featuring a man draped by a large red down jacket-like blanket, with a bird cage in his lap. It looked familiar, and then I remembered: the bird cage on the lap idea comes from Rene Magritte and his painting “The Therapeutist,” from 1937 (below right).
Is this a case of “imitation is the the sincerest form of flattery?” Or is Moncler just ripping off a Surrealist masterpiece with the assumption that most people will never know it’s not an original idea?”
Magritte, Moncler
